Application of Linear Sensitivity Factors for Contingency Analysis in Power Systems

Abstract:
In the last century in all countries, there were the liberalization of the Electricity Market and an increase in demand. In Italy, the liberalization started in 2000. Due to those crucial changes, the most extensive blackouts in power systems have increased as well, for these reasons, sensitivity analysis is used to identify the most vulnerable components in the grids. Normally large power grids are interconnected, and the failures may spread in cascades. This work presents some applications of linear sensitivity factors called PTDF and LODF, to determine post-contingency flows in real-time, and how the variations component could impact the remaining parts of the system. Moreover, it is faster and more convenient to use these sensitivity factors to face up to power system load flow problems, instead of classical power flow methods based on a system of no linear equations. The IEEE-6 bus system is employed as a reference grid, and also for numerical analysis.
